2023 Ponzi Laurelwood Pinot Noir

Joyful, vibrant, textured

America's First AVA Defined by Geology

We believe the Laurelwood District grows Pinot Noir with the most intriguing complexity in Oregon. Ancient loess soils over basalt bedrock. High-elevation winds that slow the ripening and sharpen the focus. Red-fruited and structured, with white pepper spice and a long mineral finish. Perfect acidity to move with food, from the first course through the last pour of the evening.

Winemaker Notes

Laurelwood Pinot Noir opens in the deep red and blue register — violets, herbed spice, peppercorn melody, bramble, currant, and cassis moving together before sagebrush, lilac, and dried black cherry arrive to ground it. On the palate, blueberry reduction and dried desert herbs lead into red clay, lavender, gingerbread spice, juniper, and a whisper of graphite — rich and inviting throughout, with a finish that somehow stays refreshing. Tannins dusty and integrated. Mid-palate generous. Length sultry. The Laurelwood District, fully expressed.

Pairings

Salmon tartare with yuzu and sesame / Roasted beet salad with pistachios and goat cheese / Charcuterie with Castelvetrano olives / Crispy pork belly tacos / A great burger

Occasions

The tables that matter / The Tuesday that deserves a better bottle / When you want to make a greasy sandwich your dinner / The wine that makes the sommelier smile

In the vineyard

The 2023 season moved at its own pace — a cool spring delayed budbreak, a warm May accelerated it, and a classic Oregon summer of warm days and cool nights brought everything back into balance. An early harvest, briefly interrupted by autumn rain, had all fruit in the door by end of October. The 2023 Laurelwood Pinot Noir is drawn predominantly from Ponzi's own estate vineyards — 83% — alongside trusted partner vineyards, all LIVE Certified Sustainable and grown in Laurelwood soil in the Laurelwood District AVA. Harvested September 23 through October 1, 2023.

IN THE CELLAR

Fruit was hand sorted and fermented using native yeast in small lots over 18 days. Ten months in French oak — 30% new — before racking and bottling by gravity. Unhurried, unfiltered, unfined. The Laurelwood District in the glass.
