2023 Ponzi Avellana Pinot Noir

2023 Ponzi Avellana Pinot Noir

Spicy, smooth, rich

"Compelling, generous and elegant" — James Suckling

Avellana is Ponzi's certified organic estate vineyard — the ground the winery itself stands on. Planted clonal massale over thirty years of quiet experimentation, its sunnier exposure yields a Pinot Noir of uncommon richness and depth. The estate wine, in every sense.

Winemaker Notes

Avellana opens with raspberry purée, dark cherry, and licorice root — then something more unexpected: desert sage, toasted marshmallow. On the palate, supple and concentrated, chicory and cedar wrapping around bramble berry, tobacco leaf, and cocoa powder. The entry is rich and focused, fine-grained tannins carrying through to a finish that lingers, lifted at the last moment by a subtle kiss of acidity.

Pairings

Braised beef short ribs with polenta / Peking duck / Grilled lamb chops with pomegranate and mint

In the vineyard

The 2023 season moved at its own pace — a cool spring delayed budbreak, a warm May accelerated it, and a classic Oregon summer of warm days and cool nights brought everything back into balance. Avellana Vineyard, LIVE Certified Sustainable and certified organic, was planted in 2006 to over 20 different clones of Pinot Noir — a decision that brings a wide spectrum of aroma, flavor, and complexity to every vintage. Harvested September 12–18, 2023.

IN THE CELLAR

Fruit was hand sorted with 20% whole cluster, then fermented in small lots with five days of cold soak to build aroma and color. Fermenters were punched down twice daily across 14 to 20 days, with peak temperatures reaching 90°F, before pressing at dryness to preserve fresh fruit character. The wine aged in French oak — 40% new — for 16 months, then racked and bottled by gravity without filtration or fining. Ten months in bottle before release.
