2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Reserve

2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Reserve

Voluptuous, deep, earthy

The wine that changed how the world saw Oregon.

Reserve exists because some blocks of Laurelwood simply go further. Among the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Oregon — own-rooted, basalt-anchored, decades of unhurried growth — they concentrate everything the AVA is capable of into something truly singular. Extended barrel aging builds structure around that intensity; high-elevation acidity keeps it balanced, never heavy. Dark fruit, serious depth, and a finish that stays long after the glass is empty. Limited production. This is what time produces.

Winemaker Notes

The Reserve opens with abundance — dark plum, currant, blueberry reduction, granite dust, tobacco leaf, bramble, potpourri, maple wood, and baby's breath, ginseng and coriander threading through beneath. Then, with time: cinnamon churro and rice syrup, emerging quietly as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, richly textured — birch beer, ginger, bay leaf, dried plum, dates, and granite moving in long, unhurried waves, maple wood lingering at the finish. This is what old vines taste like. Deep, concentrated, and entirely its own.

In the vineyard

The 2022 growing season opened with false promise. A beautiful early spring encouraged bud break across the valley — then a blast of Arctic air sent temperatures below freezing for nearly seven days. An unprecedented late frost event. What emerged weeks later, from the protected secondary and tertiary buds, was quietly remarkable. Summer came on strong and fruit ripened exactly as it should. The Reserve is drawn exclusively from Ponzi's estate vineyards in the Laurelwood District AVA — some of the oldest own-rooted vines in the valley. Harvested September 7 through September 23, 2022.

IN THE CELLAR

Fruit was fermented using 45% whole clusters in small lots with five days of cold soak to build aroma and color. Fermenters were punched down twice daily across 14 to 20 days, with peak temperatures reaching 90°F. The wine aged in French oak — 47% new — for 11 months, followed by 7 months in 100% neutral oak. Racked and bottled by gravity without filtration or fining. Eighteen months in barrel, total. The Reserve earns its name.
