The Laurelwood Soils

The Laurelwood Soils

Meet the Laurelwood Soils

At Ponzi Vineyards, the story of our wines begins underground. Nestled within Oregon’s Laurelwood District AVA, our estate vineyards are rooted in a uniquely expressive soil that has quietly shaped the character of our wines for over 50 years: Laurelwood.

What is Laurelwood Soil?

Laurelwood soil is a rare and ancient combination of fine, windblown loess layered over fractured basalt. This formation, shaped by volcanic activity and glacial deposits, offers exceptional drainage and a steady, cool growing environment that is ideal for cultivating Oregon Pinot Noir and Oregon Chardonnay.
Younger vines, with roots close to the loess surface, yield bright, red-fruited wines marked by energy and spice. As vines age and roots dive deeper into the basalt layer, the wines evolve to show darker fruit, dense structure, and complex aromatics. This depth and duality are a hallmark of Ponzi Vineyards’ Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

A Legacy of Soil Stewardship

Our relationship with the land is not passive. For decades, we’ve studied this soil, advocated for its recognition, and farmed with the intention of preserving its vitality. In fact, it was Luis and Anna Maria Ponzi who led the decade-long petition to establish the Laurelwood District AVA – Oregon’s first AVA defined by geology rather than geography.

Today, every Ponzi Vineyards estate vineyard is LIVE certified and managed with regenerative practices that ensure the expressive power of Laurelwood soil endures for generations.
